The Thinking

Feelings and emotions are not the same thing

One is the body's signal. The other is the story we wrap around it.

This distinction is for adults. We never teach it to children directly, but every teacher in this program carries it.

A feeling is the body's raw signal. The racing heart, the fluttery stomach, the heavy chest. An emotion is the interpretation we wrap around that signal.

Ask yourself what really separates excited from nervous. The body is nearly identical. Fast heart, buzzing energy, fluttery stomach. The difference is almost entirely the story we tell about the moment.

That is why the words matter so much, and why we never tell a child which emotion a card shows. The signal is theirs. The interpretation is theirs too.

It is also why a five year old who learns that excited and nervous feel the same in the body gains something large. They get a say in which one they are having.
